If you have irregular periods or really bad menstrual cramps - even on a hormone birth control you might want to consider Seasonale. I've been on that for 18 months, and quite like it.
I'm not that concerned about getting a "reassurance" period every month - but some women are. For me it's nice to only deal with "Aunt flo" every 90 days instead of every 28 days.
Since people react differently to medications you may have to try a couple different brands before you find one that's great for you.
I gained weight when I started taking oral contraceptives, but more noticeably I also increased my cup size (pretty dramatically.) I was petite to begin with, so these effects didn't bother me much, but you should be aware that there are a few side effects.
Talk to your doctor and get her recommendations, but know what "additional features" you want out of your birth control before your appointment.

The pill is an excellent alternative, IF you're good about remembering to take it religiously.
If you're not so good at that, then you could try the patch, ring, implant, or shot. All of them have efficacy ratings of 97+%.

I do NOT recommend the IUD because it is contraindicated for women who've not had at least one full-term pregnancy (you don't mention if you've ever been pregnant).

Barrier methods (condom, diaphragm, sponge, cap, Lea's Shield) are always a good alternative, although effectiveness is directly proportionate to the reliability of the people using them. In other words, if you get crazy and forget, or use it in an inappropriate way, its likely to fail.

"Rhythm methods" are far from fool-proof, with a failure rate of up to 35%! NOT good odds, if you ask me.

Talk to your doctor about your options...there are plenty of them out there.

I liked Ortho Tricyclen. Although I have recently switched to the Lo formula. I am not sure how I like it yeat, it's been about a month and I am still adjusting. I HATED Depo Provera (the shot) I gained alot of weight, bled constantly and I never had PMS until I got the shot. Some people don't have a problem with it, but most of the people I know had a similar experience with it.

the NuvaRing is awesome! Don't mess with those stupid pills. I always forget to take them. You put this in once a month and you don't even feel it. Really nice!

Yas (yasmine) is a good one since it is low in hormones and it doesnt make you gain too much weight.
