The answers that say you can not swallow you tongue are DEAD WRONG. You can swallow it far enough so it acts as a stopper to your windpipe. Your tongue can fall backwards and occlude your windpipe.
When you are asleep it actually does happen on a rare basis, but your brain has a failsafe mechanism that uncousiously makes your tongue move back to it's proper position.
When you ar concussed this failsafe in your brain can become damaged and when your tongue occludes your windpipe the first aid person checks for this and makes sure that the injured person's windpipe isn't occluded.
You should give Joe K the ten points.

Our body has reflexes that keep certain muscles and abilities operational while we sleep. Its the same reason why we don't stop breathing or why your heart does not stop beating. And some people actually do swallow their tongue while asleep but end up choking, coughing, and eventually waking up before they suffocate.

It is actually a physical impossibility for us to swallow our tongues. This is an old wives tale. Our tongues are attached to the bottom of our mouths and the tip is not long enough to reach the back of our throat (try it).
We can, however, relax to the point where the back of our tongue blocks our airway. However, at night our involuntary reflexes keep us from suffocating.

Lift your tongue up..you see that piece of tissue attached from the underside of your tongue to the bottom of your mouth? That's whats holding your tongue in place. Also if you cut that, other then having to worry about swallowing your tongue, you will bleed to death.

Our tongues don't go to the back of our throats very often, not even during seizures as was rumored. Although it may be possible, I think it is highly unlikely for most people to be able to swallo their own tongue.

if you look in the mirror, under your tounge there is a peice of skin called the frenulum. This is a membrane that connects the tounge to the bottom of the mouth this is why you can never swallow your tounge
