I understand from all the global warming controversy that The Maldives is only a meter or two above sea level and quite panicked about being inundated by rising sea levels as the glaciers melt. One would have thought that the great tsunami of 2 years ago would have resulted in incredible destruction and loss of life there as it did in Sri Lanka and Thailand but from what I understand The Maldives suffered minimal effects. Why?

The very absence of land mass against which waves could be built up reduced the tsunami's impact. The tsunami waves never exceeded more than a meter or so.
