So Sorry to hear about your loss.
Definitely go for a rescue cat/dog. There is surely a blessing in that.
Go to any of your local animal welfare shelters and let a cat/dog choose you. You will have an extra special bond.
Best wishes.

It depends do you want to take a lot of interaction with your pet or just when they want to. Dogs take more care then a cat walks & to be let outside Lots of training & play time. Cats will love you just as much as a dog but on their terms. Both need to be brushed but a cat you clean the litter box out once a day. It depends on your need & what you want . I have both. I love them with everything. If you go on a trip are you going to be able to bring the dog with you or will you have to pay to put him in a kennel. cats you put a big bowl of food out for how long you will be gone and 2 litter boxes and they are good to go for a the most a week or you can bring the cat with you. Do you want a little medium or large dog. I have 2 min pins they are great keep me going and I take them every where I go. They are great friend to have. My cat is great to he loves to cuddle & give me kisses & play with the dogs unless he see that I am watching then he pretends that he doesn't want them by him. Best of luck to you for dog choices check out www.akc.org

The best thing to do is go look at your local vets' board. I was searching for a cat for my birthday and everyone told me to go the local vet.
On their board, they always have ads for kittens, dogs, cats, and puppies. These are local people who are searching for great homes for either a pet or a lost pet or something.
Or you can also just look in you local newspaper or petfinder.com

what about your local Humane Society? Unless you are searching for a specific breed. I occasionally will search for Tiny Toy Poodles or Pugs, I just type in the breed and presto!!! I've got about 10 links quick fast and in a hurry!

I would go to the pound and adopt a lonely dog, that also needs a friend. They are so sweet.
