Do Black people prefer to be treated the same as White people, or do you wish to be treated as a distinct cultural and economic group? That is, should race matter? As a White person, I would not want someone to treat me as specifically White, but it seems to be different for minorities.

The mentality of our culture is screwed...and I'm sure even if u and I agreed that everyone should be treated equally or the same it wouldn't matter just as much as it states that in the constitution...so...I've noticed that there are different classifications of black people ALTHOUGH I would be offended if someone outside of my race made that determination. Within my culture I sometimes consider certain people "ghetto or a *****" while I consider myself "educated or african american". Hmmm...I guess that would be the equivalent of a "red neck" and "educated"...I mean...the whole things with that funky word "*****" just makes this whole subject even more complicated...because certain black people feel its acceptable to use it...where people like myself cringe at the very thought of using it...but it still exists...since the age of time...it was created as a slanderous word...then modified by some youngins who don't respect our culture as a whole. I would prefer to be treated like a black person...not like a white person...and I would prefer if people didn't act like they have reservations about certain races. If only we could talk about this topic without someone getting offended we could probably resolve this issue. But, since everyone has their *** on their shoulders I guess black people will continue to feel they are discriminated against and other black people will continue blaming white people for their trials...then the other black people will put all that past crap aside and move on. I don't know how white people are really treated. I was always told they get supreme benefits and opportunities I'd never imagine. Its all about the mentality though...there are so many screwed up misconceptions....I hope I cleared something up for u!!! Thanks for keeping an open mind...

AND...the reason we have black history month is to educate other races of our ACCOMPLISHMENTS. Since history books that kids in high school read only portray us a slaves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its nice to know that a black person here or there could have actually meant something in the past. GOD forbide we show respect to people who didn't found this nation but made a positive contribution. I always hear someone commending an old president...or someone from Europe who set up shop in America...so that's why we recognize black people in the meek (shortest month of the year) February.

I would much prefer to be seen as a woman before a black woman, but I know that will never happen, unfortunately. People see gender and skin color before they see anything else about a person. Anyway, I don't believe in special treatment based on race, not in today's world, anyway.

This doesn't go for just black people.

It all depends on what the minority person wants. If they want the job they will pull out the "affirmative action" card. If they want sympathy they will pull out the "white man keeping me down" card. If a white leader gets caught doing something wrong the minority groups are all over him or her but if a minority leader gets caught doing something wrong it gets blamed on someone else. What I want to see is a white version of the NAACP, boy would that get a bunch of panties in a bunch.

A white person once told me that fish do not see the water that they swim in. Unfortunately race DOES matter. It shouldn't but it does. And because of this white people unconsciously treat black people differently.

Whenever I walk into a room full of white people who are not used to being around blacks, they are all staring at me. Granted people always look at other people when they walk into a room but when I go into the bank to meet with the manager and everyone in the bank office who happens to be white is looking at me at the same time, then I am indeed being treated differently. And in situations like this, white people are either mean and nasty towards me or they go out of their way to be nice. They never act "normal" when I am around.

And I think I am able to gague what "normal" is based on other whites that I have been around who seem pretty comfortable around people of all races and do not act any differently than if they did if I was not around.

You're asking the wrong people. You have to ask white people should race matter. Since they make up the majority of the people in top political and business positions, they are the ones in control of how people are treated. Blacks and Latinos and others wouldn't be asking for special treatment in hiring if everyone was treated fairly. I mean is the reason the majority of the top Fortune 500 executives are white males because they are simply better than minorities or women? Or becaue they hired people like them and when they retired, those people moved up and hired more people like them and so on and so on.

It's Ok for people to be different and to celebrate their heritage. Irish people do it all the time, and so do Poles, Italians, etc. and the last time I looked, they were all white.

If I was black I'd be FOR RACISM, then I could blame all my mistakes, shortcomings and failures on RACISM, and namely White people. As part of the Black race I could blame BUSH for sending a hurricane to attack me, instead of Ray Nagin who didn't send busses. I could rant and rave about the Duke LaCrosse Team all the while IGNORING that black men rape white women at a 17% rate while WHITE MEN rape black women at a 0.03% rate. I could smoke crack and get voted in as mayor of DC yet rant and rave about Bush and the evil Republicans and how they are criminals. I could defend OJ Simpson because "Hey whity killed blacks for years". I could claim that as a black I have to "WORK TWICE AS HARD" at any given job, yet offer no real evidence, and then at the same time reap the benefits of affirmative action.

As a black I could stand by and let white liberals call Condy Rice a niigger, and Clarance Thomas an UNCLE TOM and not only agree with them, but pile on while I'm at it with a few names of my own.

Racism? Hell yeah if I was black I'd be all for it. It means I don't have to be responsible for the 80% illegitamacy rates of my black women. I could blame "da white man" for it. If I did choose to become part of society and actually earn a living I wouldn't be caught DEAD with a black woman, and yet I could claim all the benefits of being a victim of "da White man" .

If I was black I could name call all the other races, such as Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Caucasians, and NEVER get called on it by my pals in the press and at all major universities.

The only problem is, none of this really would help me at all. It would actually keep me imprisoned in a nice little bubble where I would never have to improve myself, face my problems and do what is necessary to move beyond where people like Ted Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton want to keep me.

No one should be treated a certain way based upon color... PERIOD. Just because there are cultural differences, it does not make one better than the other. Treat people based on their indivudual actions, not because of their color.

in my opinion, which i am not predjudice in any way, the black people who want to be treated special are the ones who are really racist, i mean they judge all white people, and another thing why do we have a black history month and not a white history month? I am not trying to be mean, but people of any race who think that they should be treated different, or superior than anyone else bc of their skin color (no matter what it may be) they are the racist ones bc we should all be treated the same

as a white person...i welcome into my day to day life - anybody that i come across...and i like them for the person that they are - i see beyond the colour of their skin

...i like the person 'within' - their smile, their charm & their personality...and i think the rest of the world should think this way too...if you thought like me - the world might be a happier, friendlier place to live!!...and a big NO...race certainly does not matter...and i would be very upset if it did!...good question though!
