I'd say the last couple of seasons of Family Guy have been funnier than the last couple of seasons of The Simpsons. But the Simpsons have accomplished a lot more ... they rely more on cleverness and satire than nastiness and shock value (not that those aren't funny too).
If Family Guy stays on the air for five more years it'll be a fair comparison. Right now, Simpsons all the way, even though I like both.

Well, I grew up watching The Simpson's and was drawn to it's humor and out-right willingness to Satirize pop culture. But as it stayed on the air it seemed to lose it's original zest. Now it's more "Family oriented" and rather dull at times.
Then Family Guy came around and was like a breathe of fresh air. It is way funnier and more daring than The Simpson's could hope to be. I love Peter, Brian (the dog) and Stewie.

With out a doubt it's The Simpsons hands down each time,to me Family Guy just doesn't have,the slap stick or schoolboy jokes
"The Secret War Of Lisa Simpson" is one of my all time faves, "when Bart is on a field trip Springfield Police Station with is school chums, and for a brief moment he is left alone in the communications room and when he connects up all the mega-phones up and says "TESTING!!!",the sound wave breaks every bit of glass in the town,and there is a high pitch ringing in the air"..this has me rolling around with laughter,just typing this is making me chuckle..

Simpson's is by far the best. Family Guy is good when you want an easy laugh. Can't forget Futurama. The humor in it is more subtle and intelligent then FG, so I think it is better than FG.
But I love all 3

I love them both but the Simpsons is getting old now and can't really make me laugh except for the older shows, Family Guy still makes me laugh but it is a lot dirtier than the Simpsons. So I'd say Family Guy.

I think today Family Guy is more popular, but the Simpsons paved the way for things like Family Guy and South Park, so the Simpsons are the original, which I think should place them in front.
