Once or twice a day there is a knocking noise or 2 which is coming from the refrigerator. It is fairly loud and I sometimes hear it during the night. I think it might be associated with the compressor starting /stopping. Is this normal?

Sounds to me like you are hearing the defrost cycle of the refrigerator... Every 12 hrs of compressor run time the refrigerator will go into a defrost cycle... What you are hearing is the evaporator and possibly the interior liner popping when it is warmed up... This is normal for refrigerators to do... This noise usually will only last 10-15 mins, cause that's the average defrost time of a standard refrigerator... I'm sure it's not your compressor, cause if it was you would hear it every time the compressor starts or stops....
