At the risk of oversimplifying my answer, I would recommend getting involved in the politics of your area. Stay informed about the issues that are affecting your community, and if your not registered to vote, then get registered and vote as often as you can.
Also write to your elected officials about what's important to you, and if your concerned about corruption by them or others let them know it. Don't be afraid, despite what you've heard they are there for you, not for corporate interests.
You can also get other people to get involved, hold public meetings about issues in your area (but find out where and how) Most importantly even if it seems like your the only one doing something about it, stay involved.

In all actuality, there's nothing America can do as individuals to absolutely stop corruption. We cannot stop it physically, and there is no way to determine what a man will be once he is in office. There have been a few politicians throughout history who have truly focused on America- to stop corruption both the candidate and people have to want what's best, and work together. Honestly, we have no power beyond who we put in office. You just have to choose the lesser of two evils, I guess.

The problem is that it takes a lot of money to run for office, so most politicians become beholden to the lobbyists.
What we should do is:
1 - Eliminate lobbying. It's nothing but legalized bribery.
2 - Eliminate campaign commercials and advertising so that if one side has a lot of money, they can't use it to buy name recognition.
3 - Create a government sponsored website that all candidates can use during the election. Anyone interested in the election can go there to find out what the candidates believe. If you don't have Internet access, you can go to your local library.
We need to stop allowing people to buy elections. It's insane.

You have the power of 1. The power to vote against any politician of any party whom you feel has lost confidence because of corruption. Indeed, it should be your duty. This power of one can be multiplied in many ways, the first of which is the vote itself. When you consider that only one of every four eligible voters actually cast votes, your vote is allready X 4. Now, go out and encourage non voters to participate, and your power of one will grow exponentially. Remember, THE POWER OF ONE (Squared).

Pay the politicians a lot less and the police officers a lot more. Because by doing this, you will really know who wants what job! ergo, they will be better on the job.
