why is it that society cares more about this horse then humans...hearing on the news he was put down because he was in pain and such..well people are in pain every day and society does not put a human down because they can no longer perform their former duties..mention assisted suicide for the terminally ill and everyone goes nuts but put a horse down and it the right thing to do

Oh, I think it was more to it than that. They were told at the beginning that there was a good chance he'd never be able to cover a mare with that bad leg, and since the Thoroughbred Association insists on live cover only, he'd have been useless to Thoroughbred mare owners. The Quarter Horse people could have used him, they allow Artificial Insemination, but the big money is in Thoroughbreds. And did you know the vet bill is into the millions and has to be paid regardless?

He was a gutsy horse and they wanted to give him a chance to fight for his life. Can't blame them for that. I've been in a few situations where I probably should have put a horse down, due to injury. Once came good. Two did not. One of those is still alive despite chronic pain and lameness (not my choice - the owner's choice).

Besides, if it would have worked, the vet clinic would have been set for the next couple decades. Talk about bragging rights. Imagine being able to advertise as the clinic that saved Barbaro.

Yes...I personally believe that is likely the main reason. But I think too many people, especially those that aren't 'horse people' just really didn't understand the severity of his injuries in the first place and truly thought he could be saved.

they don't really need the horse to be physically capable of mating, they probably took his sperm and yes he was devalued after the injury for his purpose to the owner.
