1.Put some vinegar and bicarbonate together, lot's of bubbles !
2.Recover some Copper sulfate, prepare a solution in water, add some ammonia and tahdah from light blue color to deeeep-cobalt color, now add some vinegar (or HCl) --> green color !! add ammonia -> blue color !
3. Put a small piece of marble in HCl--> bubbles !
4. Have you got some lithium ? dissolve it in antifreeze for your car (methanol). Now burn the methanol (be careful, methanol is less dangerous than ethanol when burned, but you can't see the flame, think about indycar racing) and will see a very deep red flame.
Reasons:
1.Demonstrate that sodium bicarbonate is a salt of carbonic acid and that carbonic acid is just CO2 (the bubbles) dissolved in water.
2. Demonstrate that the copper cation can be complexed by ammonia to a square planar tetracoordinate structure (changement of color), and that a weak acid (vinegar) can disrupt the complex. (if you add a lot of vinegar you will have a light green color of copper acetate)
3. demonstrate that marble is calcium carbonate and with an acid you can dissolve marble and produce CO2.
4. Demonstrate the so called flame test, the spectrum of lithium has a red line of 670.8 nanometers.

soda bottle rockets? Instruction video below. Great fun and explains Newtons law of motion in particular the Third law......which is for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Therefor the water leaving the bottle at great force causes an equal and opposite reaction of forcing the bottle into the air. (yes, it is 'rocket' science)

You can do an experiment with acids and bases. You can use citris acid (lemon, orange juice) as an acid and boil some red cabbage and drain the juice to use as a base. Then you find other acids and bases to mix in to test whether or not they are either.

To the previous respondant -
1. you mean glycerine - glycerol is a rather thick gloopy liquid which is HOCH2CH(OH)CH2OH and rather useless.
2. TNT is notoriously hard to make unless you use very specific conditions
3. Black powder (sulphur, charcol and sodium nitrate) is much safer and will produce a nice jet of flame
