I have a 2001 Toyota Camry LE (4 cyl) and occasionaly I put change from regular to premium gas, maybe once every 3-4 months just to clean out some of the impurities. I'm not quite sure if it really makes a difference, but I don't know.. it sounds good. ;)

Use the manufacturers recommended octane rating. All octane ratings have cleaning agents. Higher octane is only for higher compression engines/performance engines to reduce the susceptibility to "ping", "spark knock" or predetonation, depending on your preferred term. If you feel the need to "clean it out", just buy a bottle of fuel injector/ carburetor cleaner. Running a higher octane only confuses the part of the computer that monitors your timing, air to fuel ratio and your knock sensor.

Realistically, as long as you're not getting spark knock, run whatever octane rating is the cheapest. Unless you run a car that requires jet fuel or a mixture thereof, which is pretty rare, it's not going to help or do any significant damage.

I did a report on this in chemistry class..93 octane or the equivalent of super has more cleaning agents in it then does 87. It also burns at a hotter temperature and in other words, more complete combustion occurs. Left over unburned octane from 87 causes a build up of carbon and can decrease the performance of an engine. This takes a loooong time to happen. It's not bad to run 87 octane unless you start to have spark knock which is where the timing of the engine is too advanced for the octane level being used and the spark plug is sparking too soon. I think it is probably good to put in a fuel injector cleaner, octane booster, or run 93 in it sometimes. Its very expensive and its up to you. The only other time you should use it is if you have modifications done such as an upgraded performance chip in the ECU or computer of your car. These chips advance the timing requiring high octane gas and they create more power by taking advantage of the higher octane. Putting higher octane in a regular car will not create more power though, only if some sort of performance modifications have been done that require the use of higher octane gas. Many newer luxury cars Bmw's, mercedes etc... require the use of 91 octane or above because that is how they create so much power most of the time, by taking advantage of the higher octane and advancing the engine's timing. So it's up to you whether or not you should use 87 or 93, I would probably just put a fuel injector cleaner in it every time you change the oil as long as your car is not "knocking". Hope that helps.

sorry, there is no advantage to putting premium gas in a car that doesnt need premium. premium gas isn't "cleaner" than regular gas it only combusts better based on the octane rating. if you aren't running a supercharger or turbo or some highend engine you probably dont gain any advantage from premium gas and you are just wasting money. to clean the impurities out use a injector cleaner like an stp product. those actually do work well if you use them often enough - maybe once every 3k miles.

No, I put the cheapest gas I can find in. I also have a car that requires premium and I put in regular with no problems or reduced performance. The Discovery Channel had a show on once that was about gasoline and how it was piped all over the country to terminals. They said what gas companies don't want you to know is its all sent in the same line! You may be paying for premium but getting a mix of regular also. Save your money.

Putting a high test gas in your car doesn't clean out impurities or anything else. Oh yeah, it does help to clean out your wallet somewhat.
Unless instructions say otherwise, cars are made to operate on regular gas. They run better on regular. Some people think because premium is more expensive it must be better, like giving your car a treat.
Follow instructions and give yourself a treat, with the money saved.

Well if your car was designed to work on regular then putting in the better gas will not hurt it nore will it help it.
At the price of the better gas you are just wasting your money.
It is a fact, that most people dont use the right gas anyway and are wasting the money anyway.

If you want to clean your tank, lines, and injector? Then just use fuel injector cleaner. You put it in when your car hits a quarter of a tank. Then you put your regular gas in. It will clean out all impurities from your fuel system.

It is likely to have little effect other than draining your wallet faster. Higher-performance engines will return better gas mileage, offsetting the extra cost of the gas, but "normal" engines like yours will see next to nothing in terms of difference.
It can't HURT (although some gearhead will probably tell me I'm wrong) to do it though. It likely won't clean out much of anything.
