it's probably a paint-stripper. You have to go to the body-shop and they will sand it down to the bare metal and spray again. I work for body-shop and we repair vandalised cars sometime. It's sad, that people do this.

There are alot of things that can be used to remove paint. A vandal is usually going to use brakefluid or paint thinner, since most paint removers are going to have a color to them, and brake fluid and paint thinner take awhile to deteriorate the paint to a noticable level so it's harder to track down who did it. Acids that are used to remove paint are difficult to come by so that's not a likely option unless you pissed someone off that works at a body shop.

Brake fluid will take paint off over a number of hours. Something like Nitromors paint remover will do it a lot quicker (minutes). I guess someone out there doesn't like you unless it's just random criminal damage.

12 hours is too long for a normal professional paint remover. must be some other chemical

It could have been brake fluid this has that affect on paintwork if it is spilt on it.
