1280 x 800 is the native screen resolution of a standard widescreen laptop display.
I would leave it in this res, if you have windows xp, turn on cleartype (control panel, display, desktop, appearance, effects, use the following method to smooth... "drop down box = ClearType").
Also, if you have trouble with the text being too small, change the monitor dots per inch (DPI)= (control panel, display, settings, advanced, general, DPI Settings, =120DPI). Doing this will make everything bigger, but this may cause you probs with some programs not designed for this dpi setting
Hope this helps,

I think everything is blurry if you don't run the monitor at it's native resolution. Then again, I have good eyesight even without my glasses. I guess it's just an opinion, if you like it at a lesser resolution then so be it. You won't be able to fit as much stuff on the screen and most websites/programs are designed for at least 1024 x 768, I figure, the higher resolution the better. I just ordered a widescreen monitor with a resolution of 1680 x 1050, the more the better, in my opinion.

you do not have higher res, you just have more width.
depending on your eye sight, a 14" looks fine with the normal settings, 1024x768 is proper.
higher res means that the dots are closer in one vs another.
the old way to improve a systems monitor, given most were 15" diagonal, was to squeeze more dots in the same area.
640 x 480 = 1.3
800 x 600 = 1.3
1024 x 768 = 1.3
1280 x 1024 = 1.25
1600 x 1200 1.3
now if the screen is the same size and you change from one of those settings to another, you have changed the resolution.
when it comes to 14" monitor vs 14" notebook normally results in more dots wider, and fewer dots high.
here is the tricky part:
to keep standards of pixel density, adding width does not improve resolution.
to prove this display a picture of a circle, full screen it is round, but if you change the ration of x to y from 1.3 another value, the circle will look funny and no longer round..
remember, resolution is a measure of spacing between the "dots"

The 800x600 will work for most things, yet will be easier on the eyes because of the larger fonts. I recommend this setting, however, if a specific program or game requires a higher resolution, then change it for that particular program and change it back to 800x600 when done. If you find most of the programs you run to require higher resolution, then leave it set at the higher setting.
