Actually, I find the two are completely different. Just because you're a great "artist" doesn't mean you'll be great at graphic arts and vice versa. I know many graphic artists that couldn't draw or paint to save their lives but they make fantastic livings as graphic designers and I know many artists (like yourself...and myself included) that excel at all things artistic only to find themselves struggling with the Graphic aspects of it.
You shouldn't let that get you down. Do what you love to do in your spare time and not what you're forced to do as an occupation and you'll see your confidence grow again.

I would say yes, because I KNOW that someone can be good at graphic design and not good at fine art. It's a completely different method and different rules apply to each of them. So, I think yes. Also, you can lose your talents to a point. It's called, "Out of practice." It's like anything else. I would suggest just getting back into it. Do what your passion is. And if you're not bad at graphic design and that's where your money is, that's fine. But I wouldn't stop doing fine art completely, or you'll lose your technique, and it will take even longer to regain that ground.

Design and Art are different for a reason. Design seems to me, to be more technical, and less about artistic skill. Now when I say artistic skill, I'm kind of generalizing that to a "drawing and painting" knowledge. Graphic designers still rely on the same rules of composition and color theory. Try to think of Design as more of a collage than a painting, or such. I have noticed (including for myself) that designers aren't necessarily great artists, or vice versa. I find that often Fine Art and Design meet in the fields of printing (silk/etc.) and Illustration. Maybe looking at those two media would give you a better concept of design that are closer to a "fine art" idea. also, check out kinseyvisual.com. David Kinsey is a successful fine artist, and runs BLK/MRKT design studio.
A lot of times it can be the digital media too. I mean, picture a person not knowing how to physically use a brush trying to learn how to paint.

You can defiently be a bad graphic designer and still be great at fine art!! My suggestion would be to go back to school for a degree you truly want or at least start to practice fine art again! If you aren't happy with your carreer choice, your work is going to reflect that; in something as creative and competitive like graphic design you really need the edge of enjoying what you do. As for the question about loosing your talents-they may fade a bit, but with practice they will be even better than they were before. Perhaps this struggle with graphic design will be an inspiration or your lessons learned from it will appear in future works. Do what makes you happy, you'll be better at it-clearly that is studio art.

Can some one be bad at graphic design but great at fine art?
Yes and vice versa. Graphic arts and fine art (painting) are totally different. In Graphic Arts one needs a fine eye for design and graphics, with fine art one needs that plus the techincal ability to put paint on canvas (or whatever). I know lots of graphic artists that cannot paint at all - absolutely terrible; but they do have an eye for laying out a magazine, brochure or newspaper page on the computer.
Graphic art is more being able to conceptualize shapes (whether it be type, a photo(s), illustration or other design element (splasho of color) in an appealing manner....whereas painting is a totally different; taking a unique set of skills and talent and discipline.

Graghic design has nothing to do with fine art. Hell, I know graphic designers that can't paint a stick figure and they're makeing big bucks at it. So you suck at it, no biggie dude! Go with what you know.If you have a fine art background stick with it.
I know what you mean. I always get to artsy when I do graghic work when I should be going a lot more basic. What you think would be cool turns out to be too much or it just sucks.
Bust out the canvases or whatever your fav stuff to work with was and go back to doing what made you happy. You don't lose talent it just gets misplaced sometimes and if you had it to start with all you have to do is find it again. I'll bet once you start doing what you want to do again you'll be back to normal (Whatever that is!) in no time at all.
Good luck to you

Sure. I'm great at graphic design, but complete rubbish when it comes to fine art. I tend to enjoy problem solving visually, which is why graphic design works for me. Fine art on the other hand...I just don't possess the talent, I suppose.

Sure. I have a friend who went to the Chicago School of Fine Arts. She hated it, even though she loved art, because they were being trained to do commercial art, not to be expressive. She had a professor who kept telling her she'd never make it through the year, so she stuck it out just to show him. At the end of the year, the professor said "Congratulations! You made it after all." She replied, "Thank you very much. I quit."

It's quite possible! Some people simply are not digitally inclined, and find their talent shines best when a delicate flick of the wrist can alter a work of art without requiring a mouseclick first. ;)
