I broke my ankle in October, had a cast on for 4 weeks, wore a brace for 5 weeks, and my ankle is still swollen more than a month from no longer needing the brace. This is the first time I ever broke my ankle.

I broke both sides of my ankle. Luckily I did not need surgery. I no longer needed to use crutches about 2 to 3 days after I had the cast put on. It has been nearly 3 1/2 months since it was broken.

The swelling will never truly go away as long as you continue to walk on it. So the amount of time for the majority of the swelling to go away depends on what you are doing for it. Have you tried doing contrast baths? That is when you put your ankle in a ice water bucket for one minute then you move it to a warm water bucket for another minute. You repeat this cylce for a total of 12 ot 15 minutes making sure that you start on cold and end on cold. This process will stimulate circulation to your injured ligaments and will reduce swelling greatly. The cold will slow any further swelling and the warm then brings in new repair tissues, then the cold again will stop your body from sending too much fluid to the ankle. I hope this makes sense to you. I work with a basketball team and that is what we do to help our athletes. Good luck!

If you ankle has broken Then you need emergency medical care.In case you already went to the doctor and took care of it,then swelling could go away in a week and it usually takes 2-3 months for the ankle to heal completely.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

If your walking without crutches the pressure on the swollen ankle will take longer to heal, roughly another 2 - 3 weeks, but if your using crutches it could be anywhere from a week to 2 weeks max.

You could see swelling up to 1 year after an injury. Please keep this in mind when you are walking or standing on it for long periods of time without the use of an ACE bandage or brace for support. Hope this helps.
