Well... No. This is too simple. I think the need for a religion is present when
a) the creation of the world and natural happenings cannot be explained with scientific methods (because science hasn't evolved that far yet) and/or
b) the leaders of a group of people need a device to put people under pressure (compare pressure of the Catholic Church on people and society in the Middle Ages).

As opposed to this, a religion is not needed when both of these factors can be negated, i.e. when science and society have evolved far enough to sustain themselves through reason and not through the workings of a supernatural being. This also explains the growing number of atheists in the last centuries: with the growing knowledge, there was less and less need for a "creator".

And, just to mention that, "Scientology" has NOTHING (mind you, this is a BIG nothing) to do with science. If anything, it is based on science fiction. ^^

Yeah, I think so. But I also think that we're starting to evolve to the point where we have started to believe otherwise. Take a look at some atheists. They do not believe in any higher being, and (this is my guess) they've been around for at least the past 500 years or so. Of course, you don't hear about them because they're a minority, and they've only began to surface in mainstream culture in the past century. And you can probably even take scientology into account there too. I have no idea what that's all about, but if it's anything like the name, it's based off scientific facts and no myths.

I think more than that, it shows that man has a deep consciousness that there is a God/Creator. Logic tells us that if this is so, there can only be one, and that he is not bound by our understanding of him. So that our religion can be nearer to his character or farther from it. It is a sort of evidence for the existence of one God/Creator.

In a sense yes. There is the human need to believe in something greater than ourselves. If there was nothing greater than ourselves then there would be no desire to achieve any higher purpose than to eat, sleep, breed and die. There would be no reason to show kindness or compassion or even love.
