MSM has mild anti-inflam properties, as does glucosamine (according to most recent research/theory). Most preparatios will have glucosamine AND chondroitin in them. MSM may help in the short term (for acute inflammatory situations), but I wouldn't bother in the long term.
Chondoitin sulphate has been shown in two animal studies to potentiate bleeding (thin the blood). This may be important if you have a stomach ulcer for example, in which case get something with glucosamine only. !500 mg/day seems to be the magic no., some of my patients use 1000 mg/day, others are better to start on 2000 mg/day for a month, then drop back to 1500 mg/day.
Finally, glucosamine is generally thought to be useful for osteoarthritis, so make sure this is the type of arthritis you have (not RA or the myriad of others) before you throw your hard-earned at a bottle of this stuff.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is naturally produced in the body. This compound stimulates cartilage cells and helps to form cartilage that is essential for joint health. According to studies, 1500mg of glucosamine is the most beneficial daily dosage amount.

Chondroitin is important for joint lubrication and flexibility. Research suggests chondroitin may attract water into the joints, helping with joint lubrication. The most popular dosage of chondroitin is 1200mg per day.

MSM is basically a natural anti-inflammatory. Each ingredient is for a different purpose. You need to know if you want the anti-inflammatory or not?

Glucosamine by itself provides a good effect, which varies with each individual, but it has been fairly consistent. Several studies have shown that adding chondroitin provides little or nothing beneficial to the effect.

Get to bed a bit earlier and get a good book and just relax and concentrate on your book, make yourself really comy with lots of pillow. It works great for me, in fact, sometimes I fall asleep sitting upright.
