Has anyone ever checked one? Our other option is that we can actually fit it in a suitcase. Think there might be less of a chance of it getting damaged that way. We're staying at relatives, so cant just rent one.

Hmm I don't know if it would be too large, ask the airline, I am sure you aren't the first with the question. But you could call a second-hand shop where you are going to be staying, the would likely be willing to rent you one, even though they don't do "rentals".

Your relatives could also join their local freecycle.com and craigslist.org and look for one free, borrow, or cheap. And then freecycle, sell, or donate it if they do not want to keep it.

I saw a family picking up their stroller, car seat and pack and play from the luggage carousel once. I'm sure if you called the air line they could tell you more.

If you have access to a rolling travel golf bag, a pack and play fits very well inside and can also by used for extra diapers and blankets.
