It's the Spielberg film you don't hear about much, starring Christian Bale (as a child actor), and John Malkovich (amongst others). I love the soundtrack by John Williams...it's integral to the story, but beautiful on its own. The cinematography is gorgeous, especially when capturing contrast of beauty and filth in wartime Japan.
However, it is a long movie, and you have to really be into the Spielberg-style of storytelling to appreciate it. It's definitely one of my favs.

No's: Forrest Gump Love Actually The Shawshank Redemption Green Mile Empire of the Sun Blair Witch Yes's: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Star Wars Disney Films The Shining Pixar Films Lord of the Rings Top Gun My Recommendations: Any comic book film (if you like them); Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Hulk, Iron Man, etc. (not Watchmen because of the horribly long sex scene--it would be awkward) Mr. Brooks Snatch Superbad Pineapple Express The Matrix

One of Spielberg's best, overlooked and underrated. Did you know it was nominated for 6 Oscars and didn't win a thing? And no nomination for the director.

Well, I only saw half of it, but I didn't think it had that much of a plot. I normally like Christian Bale, but he's really annoying as a kid.
