Can you teach yourself to sing (or get an instructor), or is there a genetic basis for the ability to sing?

Anyone can be taught to sing but natural talent is needed to rise above the average. 50/50 I would say.

It is certainly a combination of both. Anyone can sing, the question is how well? A teacher can show you the techniques that help good singers become great ones, but if you can't HEAR whether you (or anyone else) is flat or sharp you will never even be good, and lessons would be a waste of money.

GET A TEACHER!!!!!!!!!! Lots of ability is needed. My sister used to take singing lessons, but she did not get any better because she was horrible and was not born with it ! I have been taking singing for 6 years now. Sense then i have gotten a lot better, Because i was born with a talent.(I am now 11). Good luck !

I think it is genetic. Bob Marley for example has about four sons who can sing, and I don't think they ever took any instruction in life. Of course you can get lessons, but you have to start off with something.

if you are learning how to sing it is great to be in tune to begin with. But when you learn you learn differnet techniques and how do change your voice for different songs. i go to signing lessons, i find them fun and interesting.
