Well Shaq has to be number one. Wilt was playing in a time where the league was mostly white. White basketball players are like black hockey players..not so good.I'm not a big Jordan fan although he comes in second. How can you say the best player of all time was a person that quit the league 3 times..C'mon.Lets choose someone that atleast has the passion for the game and wont sell out to go play baseball

How about let's be real and NOT go with Jordan as the best ever?!? But that's another whole topic.

I go with either Wilt, Magic Johnson, or Bill Russell as the "second best b-ball player ever.

Right behind the greatest player ever....Larry Bird

I'm not sure I would even put Jordan in the top ten.

Second best meaning: 1) number two, or 2) equal to number one? :P

Can't say about the players before the 80s, but it should be Magic Johnson. And no, it couldn't have been Mark Eaton. The second best name would have been Bill Mlkvy (not Fennis Dembo), after World B. Free.

Someone made a good point about competition in the league, so I'm actually going to knock down Wilt Chamberlain but he's Top 5. Same with Oscar Robertson. I think #2 has to be Magic Johnson.

Assuming Jordan is #1, then Magic Johnson would be #2.

Re: The level of Wilt's competition.

There are only four hall of fame centers against whom Wilt did not compete. George Mikan (whose career preceeded Wilt's) plus three guys who came along after Wilt retired (Bill Walton, Moses Malone and Robert Parrish).

On the other hand, Wilt competed head to head with at least 13 centers who are in the Hall of Fame, including NINE "top 50" players.

WIlt's level of competition was much stronger that Shaq's, as Shaq himself is the only center in the NBA today who will make the hall of fame (Tim Duncan will make the HOF as well, so that's two if you want to count Duncan as a center). I'm not sure that Edie Curry's 7 rebounds per game will be enough to get him to Springfield.

Once Ewing, Olajuown and Robinson (and possibly Mourning), along with Shaq himself make the Hall, that will still make only about 9 HOF centers against whom Wilt did not compete, compared to the 13 he did compete against.

Add this to the fact that Wilt used to have to play against each of those guys at least a half dozen times/season, compared to Shaq facing a HOF center twice/year, it's obvious that Shaq gets a lot of nights off, while Wilt did not.

#1 Oscar Robertson - The man averaged a triple double for an entire season and came close to doing "4" other times in his career. Keep in mind he played shooting guard.

#2 Michael Jordan.
