I believe in MA they allow civil unions. But, most state will not recognize those unions. So, if you are planning to travel there, do this, and go home. It would not be legally recognized by the state you live in.
For example, and I hate this law, but Texas passed a constitutional amendment for the state defining marriage as a man and a woman, not allowing civil unions, and not recognizing anything of the sort from any other state.
So, unless you plan on staying there, you might as well not waste you time doing it. If you were to do it, then live here, and one of you dies, the rights of a spouse would not be extended to you in the Texas courts. This is likely still the same for most of the other states in the union as well.

I believe the only state that your allowed to get married is in Massachusetts. Reguardless if you go there, or to Canada, the rest of the country wont recgonize it as a legal marriage. Society today as it was hundreds of years ago, believes a man should be with a woman and vice versa. Its going to take a long time before anything changes. I say as long as y'all are happy, then go for it!
