they are not fry at 4-5 months are you sure you dont mean weeks ? the only way to sex beta splendens is as they get older you will see that they males are larger quite noticabaly and they get more colourful with larger dorsal and pectorial fins they will also start to show signs of agression what i do is seperate them into pint glasses as they grow........

they should be full grown and not fry anymore and it should be obvious. females have a spot underneath their stomach that is on the end of the tube they spit eggs out of. if your fry are still pint sized you need to do frequent water changes to get them to grow. like daily. bettas should be about 9/10 grown and breedable by 3 months.

You should be seeing a difference by now and that difference will be just like in adults, the males are brighter in color (usually) and have longer fins. You really don't need to worry about sexing them too quickly as they look adult far before they are ready to breed.

Also, a little known betta fact.... Babies raised together will not fight as adults unless you separate them for a few days first. So feel free to drop the entire batch into a 55 gallon and wait a while. Yeah, 30-40 adult male Betta's swimming around in one tank and not fighting is a sight to behold :)

EDIT: Yes, I assumed you meant weeks not months

I take it you mean tropical fish Siamese fighters...if you've separated them from their parents the males have longer top and bottom fins. Siamese males are pugnacious and will pick a fight with other males. The females have shorter top and bottom fins but they will swim together quite peacefully.
