Absolutely nothing. No matter what we do there will always be homeless people. There will always be poor people. Its just a matter of making their suffering easy on the rest of us who are not in that situation and don't really care to witness it. This is why we come up with these worthless social programs that have the promise of getting the poor out of their economic situation, but in actuality get very little done to help it.

I know what your thinking, "man that guy is harsh and has no love for his fellow man," and I probably couldn't argue with that. Its time we quit sugar-coating everything because we don't want to hurt someone's feelings or blah blah blah. If we told the truth a little more often and stopped worrying about who we might offend today and got rid of the p.c. bullshit then maybe, just maybe something could be done about things. But because our country is now made up with a bunch of panty-waste sally's we can never say what we mean because it might be construed as mean.

Well I give up. Its the truth and the truth only from here on out even if it hurts somebody's feelings. Oh and I'm not above being ridiculed, but please if your going to do it, say something with some pertinence and intelligence don't just call me mean. Thanks and have a nice day.

Homeless people used to live in institutions like Dunning in Chicago and another in Manteno, IL. Then the homeless problem started in the 1970s when the liberals said it was inhumane to institutionalize these people. So they threw them out on the streets. About half of them are addicts. Most of the permanently homeless are mentally ill. You have to treat the illness in order to deal with the problem.

the best things to do would be to build more housing that's affordable and create more jobs so that everybody can earn themselves some money and afford a place to live and then people wouldn't be jobless or homeless now that minimum wage is gonna go up more people might be willing to work rather then sit back and collect welfare checks

It's not up to those of us that aren't homeless to fix it. If they don't want to be homeless, they basically just have to apply for the multitudes of free public housing units that are available.

Some people choose to live this way. I work for a non-profit and many of the people I work with on a daily basis choose this lifestyle. The one's who really want off the streets get off. I see it happen every day. They just decide to get off the drugs or booze. Most times it really is that simple.

The homeless thing is back? It seemed to go away during Clinton. I think there will always be homeless people. They are society's dead weight. They are drunk, addicted and crazy peoples.

Try and create programs that give them jobs to start them having income and get them some medical attention, get them all cleaned up and off the streets. But there are some people that don't want help and so we can do nothing.

Force those who are borderline "competent" into institutionalized facillities and medicate them.

Force those who are simpley "poor" into work-camps and train them.

Force those who are addicts into treatment, followed by either the work-camps or the institutions (depending on whether they recover or not).

Note: You can't help someone who doesn't want help unless you force them into situations.

Of course, this will never work, because we, as a society, think that screwing up your own life through drug addiction, laziness, or "borderline" psychosis is your Constitutional Right.
