S/he still has control of their assets. They will just need to find someone else to do the legwork for them. Also, any travel to and from court will be his responsibility, will have to pay for his police escort or whichever they send with him if he's allowed. Just make sure to file your response in time, regardless of wether or not you have an attorney for it yet.

Tell him to get a hold of his public defender/criminal attorney and have the attorney tell him what he can do.

He is entitled to file an answer with the family court and have a fair proceeding.
