Is it jealousy? Is it just that they can't stand any opinion that does not match their own? Celebrities are human, just like the rest of us-(sorry if I'm bursting any bubbles there but someone has to say it!)

Celebrities are specific forms of *icons*, and as such, are actually defined to some extent by public perspective. For some people, the idea of an icon having an opinion is sort of like the painting on their wall deciding differently than its owner where it should be placed.

Not everyone iconifies celebrities to the point of inanimate state, but many do. This same mentality is found in celebrities themselves, in the grammar used in interviews of actors, refferring to them in the role: "In this movie I'm in love with [female celebrity name], and we...", as opposed to: "In this movie, I play a man in love with a woman, and they..."

Celebrity is a complex icon, and has been around for a very long time. Saints, prophets, and heroes, in and out of legend, were the first "celebrities". Some of those icons have survived to this day.

I hope this answers your question.

I think you hit it with your second sentence. Opposing opinions tend to get people all upset. I am a conservative, so I rarely agree with the opinions set out by celebs, as they often tend to be more liberal. This angers me because I realize the clout they have, deserved or not, and I don't like that they are influencing people in the opposite direction I would like to go. But, at the same time, I have to admit that I am trying to do the same thing they're doing. My church is training its youth to work their way into places of influence so that they can be heard and have an impact on the world. How can I object to someone doing that very thing then? I can't. I have to remember that our freedom to speak has to go both ways. I can't just expect that only my viewpoint should be heard.

I sort of agree...Maybe its just annoying that they are able to make their opinions known to more people with less effort b/c they are famous and "idolized" to a certain degree. Moreso than most other people, when they speak people listen. I personally have a problem when people that are well off and have used the system they are in to their advantage complain about the system, and poverty while living hypocritically. I feel you have no right to complain about what the government is doing for poor people when you have an 8 million dollar house. It also depends on how they do it. Like Oprah, everything she does in my opinion is to aggrandize her own name and wealth....I'm rambling.....
