why do men die younger than women according to the surveys?

The popular answer is that women stress them out so that they don't last as long.
I believe that a more legitimate answer lies in human genetics (try asking this question in the biology forum). As you probably already know, human males have X and Y chromosomes in every body cell, whereas females have 2 XX's. The X chromosome is loaded with genes, expressing many traits. The poor Y chromosome in the male has been called a "criple" or empty chromosome, because it contributes very little to the physiological integrity of the male. Biologically, the human female (XX) is stronger than the male(XY). Perhaps this is nature's way of giving the female the needed strength to carry and bear children. Other cultural factors may also give the female more strength leading to increased longevity. For example, many females cry when stressed; most males would "hold it in" leading to all kinds of related problems.
Also note that in the animal kingdom, the rolls are reversed with some animals. In birds for example, XX is male, XY is female.
The male bird is larger, stronger, and has nicer plumage than the female.

That thing called the corpus calossum! It links right brain to left. The woman's is thicker. It causes us problems because whenever we think, we also feel. *scorns the fact that we have stronger emotions to deal with* But there is an upside. The brain deteriorates as a person gets older. A boy is born with a larger brain than a girl. There is an obvious reason why--the corpus calossum, which we women have more of, slows the deterioration of brain cells in older age.

Also...estrogen. That hormone that makes us irritable and bloated, protects from certain problems that men are more likely to get.

Most of the survey and statistics show that a majority of men who are not necessarily independent rely on other people normally the wife. Man spends all of married life being taken care of by the traditional women who is the care giver and make sure he stays nourished and healthy. I know my husband is very independent but I enjoy taking care of him from running errands, doing his laundry, cooking meals when he isn't cooking for me and making sure his doctor appointment are set up when he's sick.
If the women dies first at an extremely old age lets say 85, he is heart broken, old and probably having a hard time taking care of himself. Most men who had only their wives left and they pass I think they die of a broken heart which is referred to as broken heart syndrome in any medical journal.
Women will live longer to stick around to see their grand-babies and children. My G.Grandmother lived to be 95 and outlived her husband by almost 25yrs.

I think it's b/c of 2 main reasons:

-Many men don't take very good care of themselves physically. There are too many "steak and potato" men out there who don't eat and exercise properly.

-Many men probably don't handle stress as effectively as women do. Also, men tend to be more of workaholics than women, so they don't often relax (or even sleep) like they should.

In general, men take more risks, drink more, smoke more, drive faster and more aggressivley.
Example: men's cancer risk used to be much higher than women's, but when women started to smoke and drink in greater numbers, the famle cancer rates have finally reached that of men's.
