Ok well there's a lot of types
1. Pop rock- ok this is like the fray and stuff they are usually really mainstream
2. Classic rock or "oldies"- usually the singer can actually sing and there's lots of instrumental; beatles, velvet underground
3. Punk rock- usually short songs with a fast tempo about dissatisfaction with the government or mainstream society; sex pistols, social distortion
4. Metal- much heavier, music can be slow or really fast, and lyrics are about the darker side of life which is not bad; pantera, metallica
5. Ska- Its a mix of band instruments (trumpet etc..) and guitar and drums and stuff; reel big fish, sublime
6. Alternative- Doesn't really fit into any of the categories; butthole surfers, arctic monkeys
7. Indie rock- generally softer and more mellow not to be confused with emo or anything; neutral milk hotel, nada surf
8.Emo- Personally i think its awful but anyway its untalented singers whining to everyone about how they think the world is awful because their girlfriend dumped them
9. Funk- Not really singing a lot but singing/talking lyrics with loud music in background; some red hot chili peppers (not stadium arcadium)
10. Rock- the milder or more extreme version of each genre
I probably missed a few but check out all the original bands of all genres cause they are most likely the best

OK, you're interested in rock music. The themes of it are heard in classical music. The arrangement of it is orchestral. The point of it is to not over analyze the form. Before you recognise the branches, you have to be familiar with the roots.

Theres Metal - lots of guitar, lots of drum, usually screaming.
Ska - I'm not even sure about that myself.
Punk - Kind of crappy talking about anarchy and how the government ruins us all
Emo - bad guitar and bad voices usually some screaming, talking about how hurt they are
Screamo - Screaming
Rock - sometimes theres just rock, like bands like nickel back, staind, hinder, shine down, etc etc, mainly crappy bands.
Im sure im forgetting some but yeah, thats what youll hear on the radio.

You should listen to Sublime (my favorite band)
Their a mix of rock/ska/reggae/punk... I love them.
