It is not that funny to me as what happen was the first man to fall at the hands of John Brown was neither a slaveowner nor a defender of slavery, nor one who suffered by it, but a highly respected man in full possession of his liberty and favored with the respect of the white community. He had not even offered to resist. He was Heyward Sheppard, [sic. Shepherd] a colored porter, came up from the rear of the train. The men demonstrated with Cromwell. There was the bark of a rifle from somewhere in the crowd and the porter fell with a mortal wound.

God Bless You and Our Southern People.

John Brown's raid on the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry.
He hoped to ignite a slave uprising and end the question of slavery once and for all.

He held out for about 3 or 4 days. Then Robert E. Lee and the federal troops showed up and smashed his action.

He was tried and quickly hung.

John Brown's action scared the South and hastened the start of the Civil War.
