I just got out of a doctors appoinment. My next appointment, I will have the test done for GBS (Group B Streptococcal Disease) I've read the print out they gave me on it and just read something distrubing about it. It says possible complications are Neurologic problems may include sight or hearing loss and mentel retardation or even death! That worries me for some reason. Although it also says that 1 in 4000 chance of delivering a baby with GBS disease if antibiotics are given are not likely but, still. They are checking me for this next week. I'm already worried about the whole birth thing. What if something happens?? I don't know. I'm a worry-wart anyways and just need some advice. I've tried to calm down and keep my stress under level or whatever but, reading that.. pushed it over the edge. I need some help! thanks! Has anyone ever gone thru GBS with their baby? what happened? Are they fine now?

Group beta "b" strep, is a very common bacteria that is present on most everyone's skin, some women have it present in their vagina and/or rectum. If it is present in this area you will be given IV antibiotics when you deliver the baby, and the baby and you will be just fine. The test is simple, a q-tip is gently touched to the vagina and rectum and that is it. Don't worry you and your baby will do great. Best of luck to you!

with my last pregnancy i had GBS. she was my 3rd and i never had it befor with the other 2 babies. they say its natural to have, and for us women there are no problems or complications from it, but if you give birth without antibiotics it can cause prblems with the baby if not treated. they gave me IV antibiotics when i was in labor, and i had my baby girl and she is perfectly healthy, no problems and no complications. shes not 18 months old. its really nothing to worry about as long as you get the meds during labor. thats the most important part of it. as with anything there are risks, but please dont let the worry of this ruin the last few weeks you have left to enjoy your pregnancy, things will be great! good luck!

I have talked with alot of women who had that during their pregnancy. The good thing is that now they test mothers for it. My friend had to take IV antibiotics during labor. My other friend went to the hospital and it was too late to take the IV because she delivered very quickly.....End of story.....They both had healthy babies.
I think you should express your concerns to your doc and let him or her medically explain the risks and preventative measures that can be taken. Extra stress and worrying is no good in a pregnancy. I worried almost everyday, I was surprised that once I delivered I wasnt totally gray. Good luck!

This is a simple and painless test done via a vaginal and/or rectal swab. After collection of surface cells, they are cultured in a lab. That is, cells are placed in a special solution to see if the bacteria grow. If the bacteria grow, that shows the woman has GBS. If no bacteria grow, then the woman does not have GBS

Everyone is tested for it... it's a little cotton swab around your anus. Unpleasant, but quick. If you come back positive, you have to get hooked up to IV antibiotics when you go into labour. If you're negative... labour as normal.

Don't worry, they're testing you, and everything will be fine.

Not to worry. It just means they will run an IV drip of antibiotics during labor to prevent infection.

Try not to worry. Standard tests can sometimes alarm you when you don't know what it is. Even if you test possitive they treat and monitor. You and baby will be just fine.
