The origins of Groundhog day extend back to the first humans to enter the Isles. Those early travelers celebrated the wheel of the year, with the primary holidays being the cross-quarter holidays, of which what we call Groundhog day is one of the four. This was a day of significance to hibernating animals, which were some of the sacred animals of this day. People had always used animals to predict the future. Around the fifth century, it became popular to use the Groundhog to make predictions about the weather to come.
