I, too, know someone who received an extreme sentence for using marijuana. Five years for smoking a joint is completely out of bounds.
In this day and age, when hardened criminals are being let out of prison on early release and minor offenses are used to place extreme sentences, the judicial system needs to be revamped completely.
I can understand a judge wanting to sentence someone for rape, murder, child abuse, pedophilia, and other "high end" crimes to long sentences. But, to be so extreme seems a misuse of the judicial system.

If I were you, I would get the ACLU involved in their case. Depending on what the drug charges were for, you may be able to get help to have their sentences reduced.
Good Luck!!
