Dogs actually mate by going in from behind but then getting a leg over so that they end up rear-to-rear. Once this happens the tip of the male dogs penis (called the bulbus glandis) engorges with blood making withdrawal impossible.

This is called 'knotting' (as in the expression, get knotted). It is designed to minimise semen leakage; a classic example of 'sperm competition' or keeping other dogs' genetic material out. There's a period of ''jostling' until ejaculation occurs and the penis eventually shrinks so the dogs can seperate.

First timers do sometimes react badly to finding themselves 'knotted'. In these cases the jostling and its accompanying yelps sound much more like fighting than romance.

Sorry to spoil your dinner.

During mating, penetration sets off a reflex contraction of the muscles of the vagina while the tip of the penis swells. This makes it impossible to separate the two animals. This phase, called the 'tie', can last 20 to 30 minutes. During the tie the sperm is ejaculated into the vagina in successive spurts. The animals remain joined, until the contraction of the vagina muscles lessens, freeing the male.

No farmer here I can see. A male dog has something like a ball at the base of his doghood. Which once the female is penetrated it swells to lock her in place so his sperm can remain inside longer to do their thing.

The male is built that way, when they "join" he has a place on his "you know what" that swells and is like a cork in a bottle, to insure that he stays in to complete his "task". Then they have to wait till the swelling goes down, before they can separate.
