My Sony Vaio laptop was working fine till earlier. It shut off on its own and when I turned it back on it displayed an error message that Windows could not open because the file was corupted or missing....it wont do anything now but display a black screen with like barcode at the bottom of the screen. Any suggestions? Will getting a new Windows XP installation disk fix the problem? What caused it and how do I prevent it from happening again?

The problem most like is the laptop's memory. Yes, the hard drive is corrupted, but the memory did this. Your hard drive might be fine. You will need a memory testing software called memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com/ It is free.

The memtest86 is put on a bootable disk. You will need to run the memory test for a few days to find the problem. Usually the longer the laptop is on, the more heat is built up. This is when the memory might fail.

No, getting a new Windows xp disk will not solve the problem. You will need a windows xp installation disk to prove what is wrong.

Your best bet is to take it to a repair place. The problem, they will ask for 75% of the cost of the laptop to fix it. You might look for a new laptop.

If you can get a hold of a windows xp installation disk, you might be able to repair the hard drive files. But if the memory is truly bad, you will create problems elsewhere on the hard drive.

The reason why I am blaming the memory. When a hard drive fails, you will have many random files go bad at once. When it is the memory... you will find similar files damaged.

Memory cards are easy to replace. You have one screw on the bottom. If you are going to replace the memory, make sure you touch something metal on the laptop before touching any cards. Make sure you are getting the correct memory card for your laptop. There are many variations.

It sounds like you hard drive is bad. If it is, it means you'll need a new hard drive and will lose all of your information. Before that though, take it somewhere and have them check that the hard drive data and power cables are connected securely.

It might be a good idea if you post up which file it is missing, see how that is causing the problem..

did you get a recovery disk with it, if so, fix it with that.
Next step is do you have a rescue disk?
should contain 3 disks unique to your sytem in which you can go to the command prompt and start troublshooting, (scandisk, fixmbr) so on.
