Be careful with that one... It depends on what state you live in, and got married in. It is when one of the members of a relationship, usually the guy, is the only one working and is maintaining a certain "lifestyle" for the other person. You need to see a lawyer for the specific criteria.

Same as alimony..

some states allow it some dont..some will issue it temporarily and some states will issue it till the other spouse remarries..

in my case i recieved 200 a month from my x husband for 2 and a half years to get through college..

But i know a woman who recieves alimony from her x husband in the amount of 600.00 a month and will continue to do so until she remarries ..(she has zero plan on getting remarried..although she been living with another man for 8 years) which i dont think is right but nonetheless..

If you are separated and not yet divorced, the breadwinner should pay spousal maitenance ultil the divorce is settled. Normally this aplies when here is one spouse who doesn't work or whose work doesn't cover the expenses associated with the lifestyle of the marriage. If you are divorced, then this is call alimony, and it last normally a year. If you are seprated, it will last until you are divorced.

Good luck

It was formerly known as alimony. Check with a lawyer about who can claim it and who has to pay it, as well as the criteria. It varies from state to state.

It's alimony. Your spouse can recieve alimony only if you've been married over 7 years. Usually it's the wife who recieves alimony, she's the one that stayed home for years with the kids while the man worked on his career. She typically has no college education and has no prior work history which would make it hard to her to get a job and support herself.
