To protect the surface of the wood one can apply different compound and oils. The coating will form a film, on the level or slightly below the level of the wood surface. This film will protect the surface from dirt, water penetration and abrasion.
Some compounds and oils used are
Tung oil
Linseed oil
Shellac
polyurethane and paints.
