I am looking into purchasing an auto darkening helmet and the cheaper ones are 10 only. Is that not good?

Shade depends on how much welding you plan on doing and what your confortable with. I use an 8 but the helmet can go up to 13. I also recommend that you spend the money and purchase auto darkening. Make sure you also purchase pleanty of extra clear covers, especially if your going to do any overhead welding. Here is a site for some pretty good helmets:

Also if you have a Northern Tools near you or Harbor Freight you can save a few dollars on Auto Darkening helmets. Also check on Ebay.

Shade 8 is probably the lightest you want to use to properly protect your eyes. Otherwise helmet type and design is a matter of personal preference. Auto - darkening helmets are great, but more $ than necessary for infrequent use. I've been in the metal trades for 35 years, and have several different helmets. You can start with a #10 lens and go from there. Pick a helmet that you find comfortable, start with shade 10 lens, and go from there.
Bear in mind that seeing what you are doing is utmost importance, comfort next. happy welding !

According to this chart, 10 would probably be the minimum protection you'd want for MIG welding. You might consider going up to a 12-13 depending upon the type of welding you're doing and the amperage of the welder.
