Wireless Internet Signal?

Question

My BF is way up north and becuase of the distance from him to the nearest access point there is very little signal. His labtop isn't the greatest to begin with but its good enough, lol. I was just wondering if there was a better wireless frequency finder program then the one on his laptop and how about s to get it, perferably a free one, lol. Thank you for any suggestions.
