There are strips of hard and soft rock. The hard rock sticks out and the soft part is eroded away. The sand that is usually there is fromed the eroded rocks from the cliff that is ground down and also transported to the beach by longshore drift, the way that the tides and waves make it go along the coast.

Hope that helps

Some of them were shaped when pieces of land broke away from the main land mass, millions of years ago.Ever since then the constant movement of the sea by the tides has eroded away softer rocks and sand-stone leaving the harder rocks to shape the outline of the land where it meets the sea. Because the tides are regular they tend to hit the same parts of the land edge and rocks, and these are gradually over the years worn away and shaped by the motion of the tidal sea.

Coastal erosion . The softer rock erodes quicker leaving the more resistant outcrops protruding and the bays are formed wher the softer rock used to be!
