That is an evil question!!

Civil law? Criminal Law?

England & Wales only or Scotland? Both have very different legal systems.

If your teacher has any kind of answer for this at all then he/she must be lying, and if you gave an answer how on earth could it ever be proved wrong? This homework sounds almost impossible!!!

And that is just the tip of the iceberg!! The true answer of active UK laws and acts of parliament must run into tens of thousands, maybe even six figures or seven!!

We have thousands of laws in the United Kingdom. This can be split into the Law in England and Wales, Scots Law and in some cases, laws in Northern Ireland. There are also separate laws for the Isles of Man, Wight, Guernsey, Jersey etc since they all have their own legislative branch of government, independent to that of the central Parliament for the United Kingdom in Westminster.

Anything on the statute books is considered law and that means hundreds of thousands of offences and section and statutes that is law in this country.

Then there is Common Law, judicial precedent handed down by the courts in their legal decisions, which are absolutely millions since they have decided so many cases in so many courts since the time of King Norman. Although these are only major cases and recently cases from the Queens Bench Division/Divisional Court, Courts of Appeal and the House of Lords.

Then there are regulations which is also considered law and these number by their thousands if not more. Then convention and rules are also sometimes considered be law in the UK and these are not as significant or widespread as statute or common law, but still contribute to the law as a whole.

i doubt many lawyers could even answer this one theres still a lot of laws on the statute books from hundreds of years ago. like legally all men in england must practice archery on a sunday. so i dont think you could have an accurate answer to this question. and actually relatively few of our laws come from the e.u. compared to those passed in england and wales. and as someone else has already pointed out they have a different legal system in scotland so i dont think your teacher thought this one out very well.

well judging by the amount of law books in my solicitors I'd say thousands, i doubt even my solicitor knows how many laws there are. Tell your teacher you have been unable to find out, so why doesn't she/he tell you., and your right she/he is dead EVIL !!

Does your teacher even know that Scots Law is separate from English law, sounds like he/she doesn't! So you can go in tomorrow as a smarty pants and ask did they want Scots and English law added separately, so you couldn't do your homework as they only said British. ;)
