I have a 88 Corolla GTS fuel injected, that sputters and cranks but doesn't turn over (it backfires as well). And on the rare occasions that it does run (usually if it sits overnight) it'll run for less than 5 minutes and die. I already checked electrical system(battery, plugs, distributor and starter) and I replaced the fuel filter and checked the air filter. The exhaust system is a bit rusty/loud, but I really think it's the fuel pump. When I turn the key into the on position I can hear a faint buzzing but honestly I'm not positive of what I should be hearing in the first place. When I changed the fuel filter I expected more fuel to be spilled, it only trickled.
Before it died completely I noticed it would hesitate and occasionally jerk around when accelerating. The transmission/clutch and engine is fine. Also, if anyone happens to know anything else about the pump (mechanical/electric?, location?) and what places will test the pump after I take it out that would be great. Thanks
