There are immense deposits of gold in the earth, but we will never be able to mine for it. Gold is one of the heaviest elements on earth, which means that when the earth was in a molten state, most of it would sink towards the center of the earth. Uranium is another of these elements. The only gold we can find is either puked up by volcanic activity or remnants of asteroid collisions.

We've minded something like 20% of the mineable with current technology that will be feasible in the next 100 years. Most likely, we'll be able to mine asteroids by the time we deplete the earth. Due to their violent constructions, asteriods are theorized to be rich in precious metals.

I don't know what the estimate on gold deposits remaining is, but I do remember hearing that all the gold ever mined would make a cube 50'x50'x50'.

The thing about gold, its funny.
People spend a lot of money to dig it out of the ground, melt it into bars, put it back into the ground, and then they pay people with guns to gaurd it.
