Apparently, if you belive Miss Texas, it's nothing more than a competition for a $50,000 scholarship.

I'm from the old school. I believe that Miss America SHOULD be a lovely, well-spoken, well-educated role model for the young women of America. Miss America makes it ok to be pretty, smart and talented.
