A lot of things have to happen just right.
1. You're a talented singer.
2. You practice to make the most out of your talents.
3. You figure out how to not only sing correctly (hit your notes & stay on key) but also to sing soulfully, making yourself stand out.
4. You maintain an attractive or unique look that makes you stand out visually, too.
5. You write (or find) the right songs that make the most of your voice & image.
6. You try to meet the right people and make connections, so that a lot of people who can help your career come to know and like you and your voice.
7. You spend some money or find someone willing to spend money for you so you can make demos, buy equipment for recording or performing, advertise your shows & your talent, etc.
8. The market responds to your music well enough for you to make a living singing & recording.

I know that sounds like a lot, but keep in mind that it's all entirely possible. You just need to be prepared to work for it, and be smart enough to take advantage of the good things that happen for you. Good luck.

i ain't worth it. You have to make a huge investment, literally putting your money where your mouth is on your talent. You need to get signed by a big label, or if you want a bigger cut of the cash, but maybe less popularity, an independent label. Then, you need to come out with your own music and lyrics for an album that you'll usually have 6 months or so at most to complete. Your record label will own all of the songs that you wrote over your contract. you can't post your music on mySpace since your record label will lose money by you giving your songs away for free (by the way, limewire IS illegal). You will get at most 14% of the money that your record makes on your first signing, unless you're the rolling stones, which you're not. There's a packaging fee, which costs about 25% of the record's total profit. The manager gets somewhere between 3 and 9 percent. Taxes will take off a good chunk of your record. a music video will promote your popularity, but cost about half of your total earnings. And in the end, if you sell 500,000 albums and everything ends up perfect, you'll make only about $150,000 to $160,000 if you're solo. Remember, you have to be good enough, to begin with, then survive in an industry that has winds blowing against you. That's the music biz; the industry is based against the artist. If you stay as a small-time act in your town, sell and record your own records, make it small-time, you won't make as much, but you won't lose as much either. Think small, begin as a house-act for a local place if you really want it. Work on your vocals tirelessly, hope for the best, and you still might not make it.

Goodl luck, though! I'll be pulling for you

-Out!

Have you seen the American Idol tryouts? Alot of those people claim to have taken voice lessons but it sure doesn't show. First of all you have to be able to sing, then you have to land an audition so that you can get discovered. Its a small chance that it'll ever happen so good luck to ya.
