I had this problem, here's how I dealt with it. First I kept an eye on the roof and watched when they went in or were scurrying around. Then I ran up and went to the attic, I saw one in there and watched where it left. Ahh, this was the hole to focus on. I blocked the hole with mesh (it was a ventillation hole for the attic).
I then soaked rags in ammonia and hung them by the hole. I also put a radio tuned to a good ol' rock station. The idea is to make the place unattractive to them so they don't just eat their way back into this dry cozy area!
I kept checking every day they did try bite near the mesh but the mesh was steel and they stopped. I kept the ammonia smell strong.
They did not bite their way back in, and they never returned, and I never killed anything!
(I have heard even if you move them with live trap, they usually die).

The last thing you want to do is leave poison for the animals. You wont be able to find them if they are dead between the walls or other hidden places.
If you have the money hire a pest control person. Also have a contractor come and inspect your attic for holes.
The best way to prevent pests in to deny them of food and shelter.
If a pest can not find food, it will eventually leave and seek food else were.
But again. ... make sure to check around your house for holes or cracks. If a squirrel can get in, I am sure other worst rodents will get in too.
You could get a cat (or a dog) to try to scare the squirels away,
but you got to remember the some of these animals may have rabbies.
Good luck

The best way to get squirrels out of the attic is to go up to the attic with a sawed-off shotgun. What you need to do is blast those little critters to kingdom come.

Call in a professional wildlife removal service person to trap the squirrels, then have the attic repaired. Trying to do this yourself will lead to disaster. Call in a professional.

Rat poison worked for me. They were living in the eves, I could hear them squaking and scratching around. I got some rat poison and put it up there, it was gone the next day and I have not heard them return.
We keep poison out there though, just in case some other squirrels try moving in. When spring comes, we will get out the ladder and try patch the hole they were coming in from.

Try setting live traps up there. Then they can be released back into the wild, preferably quite a distance from your house. Put food they like into the back of the traps to entice them in. You might try corn, nuts, or maybe peanut butter.

My Dad used to put poison peanuts up there for their treat. It worked but you have to get the little corpses out of there. Observe the house to see if you can find out where they're getting in. Seal it.
