Heres my problem. Since I was a wee lad I loved art and I was always quite good at it. My teachers all said I was gifted and I received several recognitions and awards in highschool for my paintings, drawings, etc. but I never even heard of graphic design or knew how to use a computer. At the age of 23 I went to an Art School and received a BFA in graphic design (thinking this would be the practical degree). I struggled with completing this degree and found that most of my classmates were much better at graphic design than I am. I never quite got it. I always seemed to do work that was fine artsy or political. When I graduated I was left with a portfolio that I found to be disappointing. I was never very proud of my work and lost confidence in myself as an artist. Can you loose your talents? Can some one be bad at graphic design but great at fine art?

Graphic design is mostly about communication art. Art can be that but it can also be anything else it wants to be. For graphic design, you need to be able to identify a problem, formulate a concept, creatively solve that problem, and then sell it. By "sell it" I mean, it needs to communicate to the audience.

Art can just exist on its own whim. You shouldn't be loosing your creativity nor your technical skills but Graphic Design is not simply intuitive. Perhaps you need to focus on one part of this process if anything is lacking.

The indicative story is that you like to succeed. There is a
very ancient traditional side to art. I spend at least 2 hours a
week hawking paintings, thoughtfully cranked out. Yes I said
cranked, ah you have heard of the glorious life of artists. Tho
all that is true, there is the ace of hearts, intersocial weather.
Unfortunately tastes, fads, investments, demands, excitement,
are the art system, not only the environment. I would say that
you need to keep your style, in a traditional formula. Find a
package approach to showing, selling, working, on your pieces.
All those pieces should add up to a collection, ah, you are cured. There is one good point here, art value is much higher due to your individuality, love, sharing intellectual value. Be as
resourceful as you can. Productive art is the sustenance of nations. http://www.kodak.com

Yes, fine art and graphic art are two different things. To me graphic art is more technical. You have to make it eyecatching and have impact within certain peramiters. With fine art sky is the limit. Get back into your drawing and painting and see where that takes you. Take some drawing classes to get started again. Find a coffee shop or someplace to show your work.

Anything is possible. Keep going though....if you have natural talent...then it needs to be nutured.

Teachers.....Ugggh! Gotta love 'em...but sure don't understand 'em!

My daughter can free-hand ANYthing....but never got above a C in Art class......her teacher was an absolute A** and I'll never understand why she didn't see her potential....

Don't give up.......
