It is strong like cup coffee in morning.
By the afternoon it is all pi$$ed away.

Great fluctuation it has.
Overall ~ much force it does not have.

The yen is small compared to other major currencies, if that's what you mean -- one yen is worth less than a penny. Strong or weak is a relative temporal trait though -- in the last couple of years the Yen has gradually weakened versus the Dollar, Pound, and Euro.

I'm not sure that the Japanese central bank "manipulates" the Yen downward. Maybe, maybe not. Seems like an expensive proposition for the country with by far the worst fiscal problems in the developed world.

Japanese yen will never be "strong" against other currencies. The reaon is the Japanese government manipulate the exchange. Whenever, the Yen becomes strong, the finance department will move in and start dumping Yen. This is especially obvious against US dollar.

That move is to help the export for Japanese manufacturer.

You can find news about that.

The yen has increased over the past few years as there has been weakness in the US dollar. I would bet against the US dollar if you're looking for trends. Massive budget and trade deficits. The monoploy on oil trade in US $ will end as well.
