The CMP mission was to orbit the planet taking photographs and being able to re-dock with the LEM. The whole plat form was far to heavy to land. So they send the LEM down and the CM stays up. That way after blast off from the moon, the CM can combine with the LEM for trans earth injection, a blast from the engine large enough to take them out of moon orbit and put them on path towards the earth.

One of the things that the moon landing hoaxers do not know about - the complexity of landing on another body.
You need a very light craft, so how do you get a craft big enough to get you there, but small enough to land safely (remembering the moon is full of bumps and holes of various sizes). the answer is you take two craft. One to orbit and the other to get down onto the moon and back.
Lots of people on this site wonder why the Shuttles don;t go to the moon, and use this as an argument as to why they think it didn't happen in 1969. Well, can these idiots imagine how you would land a shuttle on the broken and pitted surface of the moon, when the thing needs a 3 mile flat runway to get down.
Also the rocket that carries the shuttle into orbit is a fraction of the size of the giant Saturn V, that was required to get the command module and its attached LEM beyond Earth's orbit.
I wish these people would read some real stuff rather than all that hoax garbage. I hope you are not one of them.

The command module orbited the moon so that the lunar excursion module could descend to the surface and then later rendezvous back so the command module could take the crew back to earth.

I don't know for a fact, but it probably used the gravity to slow down.
