Do you think the intent is to reuse the same characters to show history progressing? Do you think that each Final Fantasy story is some type of parallel universe? Thoughts on why we see the same characters in all of the stories - with just a few newbies to shake things up?

The only worlds that are reused are:
- Spira in Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 (because they are direct sequals)
- Ivilice which is the worlds of Final Fantasy Tactic, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Final Fantasy XII.

Only Montblanc is a character that is in multiple Final Fanatasy. Although there are people who have the same name (i.e. Cid, Biggs, Wedge, and a handfull of others) they are not the same character and only share names.

With a couple exceptions (Final Fantasy X and FF X-2 comes to mind), the worlds and characters are completely seperate between games in the Final Fantasy series. There are a bunch of themes that are shared between some of the games (chocobos, a guy named Cid, dark and brooding heroes, etc.), but that's far different from saying they're the same.

You have it backwards... characters generally are *not* re-used between games, although for awhile they've had a few characters in each game with the same name: Biggs, Wedge, and Cid for example.

A few elements like airships and chocobos are common between games as well, but for the most part all places and people are different between the games.

Since they're so unrelated, I imagine they take place in alternate realities and/or different worlds.
