removed radiator to paint, now back on wall it appears to fill with cold water but not heat up at all. Valve on left of radiator as you look at it appears to turn but do nothing, does it need replacing?

When you re-fitted it did you leave the bleed valve open while it was filling back up with water? If not this is what you need to do... Sounds like it is full of air....

If you did, try turning the 2 valves off on the pipes which go into the radiator and then drain it again and try what I said first...

If this doesn't work you may have a dodgy valve... In which case you will need to turn all the water off and then replace the valve.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Drain down, remove rad, take into garden and flush with hose.Replace BOTH valves (note which was 'lockshield)Replace Rad.
be aware that of the two valves one valve must only be open say 1/2 turn, the other fully. try ensuring both valves open, shut the control (not lockshield) valve on other rads, then bleed Rad should get hot, this proves it can. Now, open your other rads to the system, they should all get hot. If another rad is now running cold (its possible!) we have a balance problem. Check which rad gets hot first...second etc, and close the lockshield valves 1/4 turn on each rad in turn in the same order...painfull, but the only way.

No, just bleed the air out of the rad, there is a little bleed screw on either side at the top. U just open it slightly , using a thick old towel or rag to catch water. Open the valve enough so u can hear hissing sound, thats the air comming out, eventually it will start to bubbleas a mixture of air and water comes out, continue until water comes out only and without bubbling a lot, and when it does then job is done, Good luck.

Please let me know how u get on.

The temp sensor (if it has one) may be clogged or screwed up. Check that first. Also, one of the valves might be clogged, so it fills but doesn't hold the hot water or let the water flow thru. Unattach and check all the valves and flow and if you find a blockage or something, remove it and try again. At the worst, have a plumber look at it before replacement.

Turn both valves anticlockwise to make sure they are fully open,Then bleed air from the radiator. If you have a combi boiler make sure the pressure gauge is at 1 or 1 and a half bar then turn heating on and seeif the rad heats up.Don't forget to check pressure gauge after bleeding air from rad.

you need to bleed the radiator in other words let the air out the top so it can fill with water instead. you can buy a rad key for 20p open the little square nut on back or side of rad and you hear a hissing noise this is air escaping when it turns to water close the nut and job done

I had the same problem, the radiator needed the sludge draining out. If the valve is frozen it wont move, and you should be able to test it by opening it a little while the radiator is disconnected.

It sounds like the valve you mention is not opening. with the steam/hot water supply shut off, remove the valve and see if it is in fact opening or not. if not, replace the valve , open it, and open the steam/ hot water supply. the steam/hot water must flow constantly through the radiator for it to work.

you will need to bleed it there should be a square screw at the top of the rad on one of the sides you will need a bleed screw which you can get from most d i y stores turn the screw one turn and you should here a hissing sound after a while water will come spray out so a have a rag at hand then tighten the screw back best done when cold
